The class was studying Native American culture so we incorporated this into our Crafted project. The children experimented with fabric and fibre making tee pees and dream-catchers. We then worked on making ceramic totem poles where the children explored their spirit animal. The animal they felt most connected to their personality. They hand-built them from terracotta clay, decorated with coloured slips and glazed. The work was fired in my kiln. The children held an exhibition in the classroom for the other students to show and explain their project. They also kept diaries about what they had made and their thoughts on the project. The totems were placed on the grounds of the school and the children sang Native American songs and played instruments which they had made.
